Curriculum

New National Curriculum

Below you will find detailed guides to our curriculum by subject, year group and term.

We have a new national curriculum which all maintained primary schools are using this year. There have been some significant changes. The content in almost all subjects has been slimmed down, except in Mathematics, English, Science and Computing. For example, in Mathematics pupils will know their 12 times table by the age of nine, write computer code from Year 3 onwards; in Science there is a shift towards the acquisition of facts alongside 'working scientifically' and in Literacy there are detailed spelling lists for each year group. Key Stage 2 pupils will also learn a Modern Foreign Language. Our pupils will learn French.

The old system of 'levels' used to report children's attainment and progress has been removed and will not be replaced with a new national system. Old Sarum Primary School is developing a new assessment system in collaboration with a cluster of good schools across Salisbury. We will continue to keep you informed about these developments throughout the year.

PHONICS TEACHING

At Old Sarum Primary school we follow the letters and sounds guidance set out by the DFE from Early Years to Year 6. Children who need additional support are given extra phonic sessions during intervention time with a trained TA in sound discovery. Phonics is taught daily for 20 minutes across the whole school and regular assessments are used to make sure children are making progress in their learning.

Each year in June all children across the country are tested on their ability to decode and blend real and psuedo words using their phonic knowledge. The test is made up of 20 real and 20 psuedo words which use sounds from phases 2-5. Attached are a list of mock tests which replicate the word structures children will see in the real test. These are taken from the Oxford University Press website.

If children fail to reach the pass mark in year 1 then they have another opportunity to retake the test in year 2.

MATHLETICS

The pupils in our school have individual passwords to use this great online learning resource. Mathletics is validated by the University of Oxford for use by primary school children. Schools where pupils spend as little as twenty minutes a week using Mathletics benefit from higher progress and attainment rates compared to pupils in schools not using Mathletics.
